Twitter is expanding its TV strategy with the launch of a live streaming video app on Roku’s platform. This is taking place a few months after the TV app was first launched on Apple TV, Fire TV and Xbox One to combine live video streaming alongside top tweets.

The channel offers live streaming video that includes sports broadcasts as well as news and entertainment shows. Viewers will be able to integrate and browse social feedback from the Twitter timeline. The free Twitter channel is available to anybody with a new generation Roku device. Twitter’s stepping into the TV space is taking place simultaneously with its live video streaming venture.  The company declared a number of other new live content deals at its Digital Content NewFronts presentation held in New York this week. They announced their partnerships with Major League Baseball, the NFL, Viacom, the WNBA, Bloomberg Media, BuzzFeed, Live Nation, Ben Silverman’s Propagate, the PGA and IMG Fashion.

This week in Q1 2017 Twitter declared that they have streamed over 800 hours of live premium video across 450-plus events. These live videos have helped the to gain approximately 45 million unique views, and it shows the rise of 31% from the last quarterly report, Q4 2016.

Previously in March Twitter officially released Periscope Producer API to encourage amateur video producers to showcase their work on the live stream. This API enables video creators to stream high-quality video footage from external cameras, drones, as well as studio feeds.  They can also monetize their video content with Twitter’s pre-roll ads to Periscope. However, Periscope streams aren’t accessible through the Twitter Roku app.

Product manager at Twitter Ryan Troy claimed that The Twitter channel on the Roku platform has brought together the video and related commentary of the viewers that encompasses live events to the largest screen in the house. Roku’s audience can now watch live events and witness what other people are talking about. This will keep them connected to what’s happening around.

With its partnering with Roku app, Twitter is expected to grow its reach to a great extent. Recent reports claim, nearly 13 percent of all smart TVs sold in the U.S. market are now Roku-ready. This app is gaining its popularity as this helps to stream entertainment from the internet directly to smart television or any smart devices much effortlessly. Roku executives also declared to have more than 13 million active accounts per month across its streaming devices.
