The newest addition that Google has incorporated in Google Earth is elements of topographic maps, satellite imagery, and 3D imaging cities. This brings in a whole new range of updates for viewers. The announcement for these updates was made on April 18, 2017, at an event in New York’s Whitney Museum. The update is conveniently available only for the Android and Chrome users. This bigger and newer update is an improvement of the company’s last year’s launch VR version of the app.
Two more years down the line and better features like Knowledge cards and more will be added. In the words of Google Earth director, Rebecca Moore, “This is our gift to the world,”. Rebecca added that it is a product that speaks to our deepest values around education and makes information available to people. This has been made to commemorate The World Earth Day and lends it a new facet. This would help recreate new stories of Earth and the people as well as lend a new perspective to locations thus initiating discoveries.
The First Element: Voyager Tours
This feature enables users to travel through a location. Every nook and corner of the specified location can be viewed as the new feature holds a 3D image of the city. This feature makes traveling easier, simpler and interesting. One can now sit and home and get a pre-guided tour before actually making reservations.
I’m Feeling Lucky Tab
A very comprehensive feature, this allows users using Android or Chrome to locate and know new places. Users just need to sign in and traverse to ‘points of interest’ section and they will get complete information about the place, along with the easiest ways to get there as well as rough pictures. The Knowledge Card placed there also informs a user about the history and facts of that place along with more pictures. A database of 20,000 different places from around the world can be viewed here. It has several other features attached like personalized travel planner, online trip planning, airfare booking tool and much more.
3D Image of the Location
Another feature is the 3D map available of any location that you want to visit. Users can browse and track their locations conveniently and that too in 3D images. A 3D view of any location makes it easy on the part of the users to check out a location in detail. This is available in the feature of Street View. This 3D mapping lends a new perspective to the way a user looks at a city.
Use of Artificial Intelligence
The use of AI has improved Google Earth and has added elements that provide a detailed insight on any location that the user is searching for. All the information is provided online. Not just this, AI also helps in making suggestions that would help explorers learn about new places.
Some more new features added on Google Earth aid in taking a user through a traditional journey around cultures of the world and also click pictures during their travels and sending digital postcards to friends.
